6 Keys to Creating a Clear Church Volunteer Vision



Volunteers without vision are like those who try to navigate their way through darkness blindly – futile. For your church to run successfully you need volunteers and for them to do their jobs effectively they need vision.

It is crucial that your volunteers understand the purpose behind their roles and what the church hopes to accomplish. Let's look at 6 keys to help you create a clear volunteer vision for your church.

Set a clear purpose

Without a clear purpose your vision is incomplete. Determine the goal behind volunteering. Is it to bring the community together? Are you trying to reach those outside the church? Do you aim to help a set number of people? Most people cannot be passionate about a cause without knowing the main purpose behind it.

It is important to keep in mind that the purpose could vary from season to season. For example the purpose for opening a soup kitchen during Christmas won’t be the same for hosting a Passover meal at Easter. On the other hand a community dinner will be aimed at reaching the unchurched and getting them to visit outside of church hours.

Set a fun tone

Volunteering alone is not fun and it defeats the purpose of being part of a church. Therefore encourage your volunteers to have fun intentionally! After all that’s what makes it such a great experience, stepping out of the pew to serve AND have fun with other members while doing so.

Make sure that your members are aware that it is not an obligation but rather a fulfilling role which helps them become more connected to the body.

Connect volunteering to values

Determine the specific values your church lives by. Is it to promote positive change, or is it to maintain a servant’s heart? Many people shy away from volunteering because they can’t see how it ties in with your church values. 

Whatever your values may be, volunteering should serve as a platform to showcase them and prove to members that it edifies and grows the church. 

Lead by example

If you are in charge of a project and you aren’t passionate about your vision, how can you expect any of your members to be enthusiastic and eager? Your volunteer vision is about making your members feel as passionate about the cause as you are. Therefore it’s crucial that you lead with clear communication and vision and ensure that everyone understands it and feels as strongly about it as you do.

Clearly state your vision

Write down the vision – clearly & plainly. Post it in the member area of your Elvanto account, or create a page specially for the purpose of communicating your vision to your Volunteers every time they login. Your volunteer vision is an actual statement that needs to be written down so that volunteers can always have a reminder to go back to when their enthusiasm and passion starts to wane.

Creating a statement helps volunteers better connect to the purpose behind the cause and serves as a foundation for your church and what they want to accomplish through volunteering.

Show how volunteering impacts lives

Lastly, your vision should showcase how volunteering changes lives. For many it is extremely fulfilling to see how their service has impacted the life of others but what’s even more fulfilling is the realisation that their own lives has changed and they have become more like Christ.  

Volunteering holds many benefits, not only spiritually but also physically and mentally and it is important for members to realize the positive effect serving has on them as well. Your volunteer vision should show people the far-reaching impact it makes and carry personal testimonies of how people’s lives have changed after they’ve been helped by your volunteers. For example a beggar who has found a job, place to live and has managed to turn his life around because of the time and love your volunteers have sown into his life.

Ultimately it is these stories of victory and overcoming that will cause an army of volunteers to rise up and serve with hearts that are unified in vision.
